I specialize in developmental and line editing for academic researchers in the social sciences, humanities, and related fields (see list below).

I read as both an expert in your argument's logic and a stand-in for your eventual audience, so that what you intend to say and what readers actually take away from the page match. With a PhD from Columbia and 8+ years of full-time editing, I aim to support you through the process of bringing your ideas to publication: reordering where it helps the argument, cutting where it gets in the way, and raising questions where the reasoning needs to be tighter. I'm especially glad to work with writers who know their research can move the world forward.

What Is Developmental Editing?

Developmental or structural editing is big-picture editing that looks at your argument's structure, logic, and flow. I identify gaps or weak points in your reasoning, suggest how material might be reordered or expanded to make your case more persuasive, and flag where a paragraph's point isn't yet clear from its first sentence. I'm not assessing whether your work deserves to be published (I'm on your side — and brutally honest), and I'm not a subject expert weighing in on your field. Instead, I work with you to help you convey more clearly what you already mean to the audience you're writing for.

Line editing is the complementary, closer-up pass: Once the argument itself is sound, I work sentence by sentence to sharpen your wording, tighten rhythm, and resolve the small ambiguities that can blur an otherwise strong point.

Firsthand Experience

I've edited over a hundred peer-reviewed articles and numerous books, several of which I've seen through from the book proposal stage to reader reviews and contract. I also hold a PhD from Columbia University, have published my own book with Cambridge University Press, and have served as a reviewer and guest editor for peer-reviewed journals. I've worked with academics, including a Nobel Prize winner, from a wide range of fields, as well as with non-profits and organizations, including the United Nations.

Multinational Expertise

Originally from New Zealand, I grew up in southeast Asia, studied in the United Kingdom and United States, and currently live in France. I am committed to helping non-native English speakers communicate with confidence, clarity, and authenticity. I am comfortable with American and British language conventions.

The Process

Email me at editor.emmaberat@gmail.com with your manuscript (optional) and any relevant details (target journal, reviewer comments). I'll reply within 24 hours with an estimate of cost or further questions, if needed. For longer projects, let's have a Zoom call.

2. Receive a Quote

I charge an hourly rate, which starts at €50 (~US$58).

If the cost is prohibitive, and you are a non-profit or have a project you believe the world needs, please reach out to discuss!

I typically edit 1000–2000+ words an hour, depending on the type of editing required and state of the draft.

3. An Efficient Turnaround

For documents under 10,000 words, I can often return edits within one week or less. If you need an edit urgently, get in touch; I respond quickly and will do what I can.

Confidentiality & AI Policy

Your unpublished work is confidential. I do not share it, discuss it, or use it for any purpose other than your editing.

I do not use generative AI in my work: your text is never uploaded to any AI platform, and my feedback and edits come solely from my own assessment.
